Descaling and Maintenance Kits
What keeps a tankless heater running at full flow: flush kits, descaler, service valves, scale inhibitors and recirculation pumps.
Scale builds on a tankless heat exchanger faster than on a tank's bottom, because all the heating happens in a few feet of narrow tubing. Makers' manuals call for periodic flushing, more often on hard water: a small pump circulates vinegar or a descaling solution through the unit for about an hour.
Isolation valve kits make the flush a ten-minute job: two service valves with hose ports, plus a port for the pressure relief valve that plumbing codes require on a water heater.
A recirculation pump keeps hot water close to the fixtures so the wait at the tap shrinks. Some heaters have one built in; others take an under-sink or at-heater pump.
Start from your hot-water demand
Time for the yearly flush
A pump, two hoses and a bucket circulate vinegar or descaler through the heat exchanger.
Scale is back sooner than you'd like
Descaling solutions go in the flush bucket; scale inhibitors treat the water ahead of the heater.
A new install, or no service valves yet
Isolation valve kits add shut-offs and hose ports on the hot and cold lines, so flushing takes minutes.
A long wait for hot water at far taps
Recirculation pumps keep hot water moving toward the fixtures.
Install facts to confirm first
- Follow your heater's manual. Rinnai's flushing guide calls for flushing at least once a year with 4 gallons of white vinegar; other makers set their own method and interval.
